The Nair or Nayars are a group of Indian castes living in Kerala, comprising of various castes and sub-divisions. Looking at their history, they used to live in large family-units which were called ‘tharavads’ which consisted of one common female ancestor. As a guardian of their clan, they worship the serpent. The Nair have always been in the field of politics or government sectors holding essential position in education and law. The main area of interest in the Nair culture has always been their marriage customs which consists of two rituals - the pre-pubertal thalikettu kalyanam and the later sambandam.
